What is Wisdom? A new weekly post using proverbs.
What is a Proverb?
According to Google (insert irony here) a proverb is a short, pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.1 Proverbs are ages old riddles and sayings passed through the generations “for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young”.2
In this weekly column, you’ll get to read a proverb. But please don’t just read it and dismiss it. Spend some time marinating in it.
Read it silently to yourself. Read it quickly, then slowly.
Read it aloud. Listen for rhyming words. Try to read it to the tune of your favorite song, or with a certain cadence.
Dissect each word to understand it’s meaning. Use a thesaurus or dictionary to understand the words: in what language do they originate? What are acronyms and synonyms for the word?
Paraphrase it so you can more easily understand it. Use words that are perhaps more modern, or that add more emotion to the saying.
Let these proverbs sink deep into your soul.
Think of this column as a weekly update to your internal GPS. This wisdom will guide you towards the balance and fulfillment that you crave.
